 LAWS of the PAST

Hilltown Pike at Route 152 (former post office building at left). Established in 1817, this Post Office is reported to be the earliest north of Buckingham.
In the past, many of the responsibilities of the government were similar to those of government today. The 1873 publication Rules, The Courts of Bucks Co, PA. outlines the legal responsibilities of Bucks County Courts. These are the rules by which local governments operated. Notice how many of these responsibilities are the same as government's responsibilities today.

Until 1922 Hilltown Township was run by two Justices of the Peace. Later, one Justice of the Peace was replaced by a supevisor. Eventually, the running of the Township became the responsibility of three supervisors; the Justice of the Peace handled only legal matters.
