ACTIVITY SHEET

 GRIST MILL MACHINERY

An 18th Century Grain Mill

Directions: Using the drawing below, identify as many examples of simple machines as you can find. Many of them were used as part of the operating machinery of a grist mill. Circle or use highlighter to mark each simple machine; draw a line to connect the circle to a LABEL that you create to identify the specific type of simple machine (for example, "lever").

Helpful Hint: You may find it easier to identify the simple machines in this drawing if you think about the type of tasks that the grist mill needed to do (turning, pushing, lifting) and then think about the type of simple machine that would help with this task.
