Schwenkmill Road - Truss Bridges

Location: Schwenkmill Road, East Rockhill Township

Stream: East Branch of the Perkiomen Creek

Year: Built 1883

This bridge is located on Schwenkmill Road near Branch Road.   A series of truss rods work together to provide support for the bridge.

Steel girders are bolted together on this bridge.   The girders provide "support" for a family of birds as well.   The rods are connected at the roadbed level to the beams.

Note the threaded nuts that can tighten the tension on the rods.   Additional "x" shaped trusses are found on the verticle supports.   Note how triangulation is also used to connect the roadbed beams to the sides of the bridge.
