PLOWING FIELDS

After a long winter, as the color returns to the vegetation, local farmers begin to plow their fields in preparation for planting this season's crops.

 1. Plowing a field takes a lot of power; a tractor is used to pull a set of plows.   2. The plowshare or blade cuts the soil; then the soil is lifted and turned by the curved shape of the metal blade.

  3. Five plowshares cut through the soil in one pass.    4. One pass is lined up with the previous pass of the plows. After plowing, the field is rough- too rough for the planting process.

 5. Next the disk is attached to the tractor. The disk tool cuts through the plowed soil to help break it apart.   6. The field is then cultimulched using these tools to even the soil. At left this mechanism removes any large lumps. The tines to the right then pull through the soil to even it out. We are ready to plant something !
