RED FIELDSTONE GRAVES

Gravestones come in many different shapes and colors. For example, the early red gravestones at this cemetery are field stone taken from a local property. This is from the 1700's, before marble was bought from the city.
Here is a design on one of the red gravestones in the cemetery. On this gravestone there is a detailed carving called a distlefink - often found on PA. Dutch hex signs. These designs were used to ward off evil spirits.

This is the grave on which the design above is found. The distlefink is located at the top of the gravestone.

These early red gravestones are written in German. Our community was first settled mainly by German-speaking immigrants. Initially, these settlers were called the Pennsylvania Germans.

These graves are very brittle and must be treated with much care.
