|Gravestones come in many different shapes and colors. For example, the early red gravestones at this cemetery are field stone taken from a local property. This is from the 1700's, before marble was bought from the city.|
|Here is a design on one of the red gravestones in the cemetery. On this gravestone there is a detailed carving called a distlefink - often found on PA. Dutch hex signs. These designs were used to ward off evil spirits.|

These early red gravestones are written in German. Our community was first settled mainly by German-speaking immigrants. Initially, these settlers were called the Pennsylvania Germans.
These graves are very brittle and must be treated with much care.
