Arch & Suspension Bridges

Suspension Bridges

Suspension bridges are used to span long distances. Most suspension bridges span lengths of 2,000 to 7,000 feet. They are also the most expensive type of bridges because they need to be both light and sturdy. Suspension bridges suspend the road from cables.

The Benjamin Franklin Bridge spans the Delaware River between Philadelphia, PA and Camden, NJ.

Arch Bridges

Arch bridges are the oldest and most sturdy bridges. They do not have all the force pushing down. Most of the weight is distributed to the bank of the river or chasm. They were first developed in Egyptian times.

This arch bridge is located on Callowhill Road in Hilltown Township, PA and features two arched spans.
