GRAIN PROCESSING

Grain is processed for various types of animal feed at the Davis Feed Mill. The photos below will illustrate these processes and the equipment used to process the grain.

GRINDING and CRACKING

Grain products are ground and cracked at the mill before bagging or bulk delivery. A variety of machinery is used to complete these processes.    Bins such as this hold grain that goes into the grinder.

When grain is ground to a coarse powder it is called meal. Wheat and corn (seen here) are the most common grains ground to meal.    Mixers combine meal and various grains for feed products.
This machine (at right) cracks corn kernels. The corn cracker cracks corn at the hammer mechanism in the center (between the man's hands). Once the corn is cracked (and smaller), the particles fell through the metal openings in the machine.

BIRD PRODUCTS

Many bird products include seeds and cracked grain. The products are moved through the mill with a series of chutes.    Once the seeds and grain are mixed together for the bird feed they are weighed out and bagged.

This machine removes the excess dust from the bird seed as it mixes the grain. The fence-like part of this machine removes strings and other debris from the product mixture.    The excess fine dust is blown into the bag (at right) once it is removed from the bird feed mixture.
