HARVESTING CORN

Most grain in this area of Pennsylvania is harvested from September and later into the fall. But wheat and oats are harvested in July. The field corn (seen at right) is ready for harvesting.

Scott Labs demonstrates the harvesting of corn in Bedminster, PA in the photos below.

A self propelled combine is used for harvesting all grain including small grains, corn, soybeans, wheat, etc.    The combine works by taking the whole stock in the front of the machine where the large fingers rake the crop into the machine.

The combine has its own power unit. Note the huge wheel and axel that is part of this power unit.   Chain gears help to power this part of the equipment.

A large auger helps to pull the corn stalks into the combine.   Inside the combine the grain is separated from the residue (from the cob and stalk).  Here the residue is thrown out of the combine and back onto the field.

Here is what the corn field looks like after the combine has harvested the corn.   When the huge bin in the combine is filled with corn kernels, they are loaded onto a waiting truck.
