CONCRETE BLOCK PRODUCTION

The raw materials used to make concrete blocks are either from the Haines & Kibblehouse Quarry or are purchased from other businesses. The raw materials are dumped in a receiving hopper and are carried by a conveyer belt to some inside storage bins.

Cement is added from cement silos. Cement and water are added in the mixer with sand and small pieces of stone.

Materials are fed into the block machine on command. The required shapes are formed from the mold that is put into the machine. This process runs automatically once the correct mold is in place.

A system of conveyors and elevators move the blocks from place to place

Curing of the concrete blocks occurs in a kiln (that heats up); the kiln accelerates hydration (the evaporation of water). This process shortens the normal seven-day drying time needed to strengthen the concrete to a 24-hour period.

The concrete blocks are moved by another series of conveyer belts to the yard.

Typically, paletted concrete blocks are cured in 18 hours after they are formed by the block machine. The blocks are stacked in the storage yard ready for delivery or pick up.
