Firefighters in Perkasie

The Perkasie Fire Company has always been made up of volunteers. In the beginning there were 32 members and today there are 60 members.

These four photos of the Perkasie Fire Company members were part of an fire scene staged for a 1939 movie about the town of Perkasie.

When Ken Treffinger first joined the fire company in 1947 he was issued a helmet and coat. Most firemen at that time purchased their own gloves. They had no protective pants, goggles, flashlights, or other special personal safety apparatus. In the past one could not join the fire company until they were 21 years of age.
Today personal safety equipment is designed to fully protect and cover the body (breathing apparatus, gloves, and other tools seen at right). Members can join a volunteer fire company in the community where they live at 16 years of age.
All firefighters have other jobs and family responsibilities. When a fire alarm is sounded, they leave they jobs, homes, and sometimes special occasions or holiday celebrations to help others.
Firefighters of both the past and present are dedicated to serving the community. The siren sounds and they are off to help. But now in the middle of the night, the siren does not blow - firefighters have beepers that alert them that their help is needed.

TRAINING

Firefighters are required to complete and pass a 112 hour firefighter school training program. Additional training can be taken for specializations such as driver (Pump 1 & 2) and auto extrication. Training is held at the Bucks County Fire School.
