Reliable Standard Hatchery buildings in 1939. |
Allen Strawser was the owner of the Reliable Standard Hatchery on Hagersville Road (now Fifth Street) in Perkasie, PA. This hatchery was located where the housing development is built on Penny Lane (just off Fifth Street - not far from Patricia A. Guth Elementary School). The hatchery produced eggs and chickens for sale. |
This hatchery opened about 1918 with a 50 egg incubator. Allen Strawser annually added to the hatchery's equipment. After a fire destroyed the incubation house, a fireproof building with the capacity of 30,000 eggs was built in the 1920's. Heat was supplied from a coal burning plant. By 1929 demand exceeded supply and many orders were turned down. In 1930 Mr. Strawser received a 30,000 egg capacity electric incubator doubled to capacity of the operation, making this hatchery one of the largest in the country.
