Topography and Watersheds

Topography is the surface features of a place including hills, valleys, streams, lakes and even man made features such as bridges and roads. Topography affects where and how water flows in a watershed.

This is a river connected to a watershed. You can see how the river slices right through the mountains. Mountains are one thing that can affect watersheds. The water has to go around the mountain and make a path. The topography can affect the speed of water; when water comes to upward slope, it slows down and changes direction. When water comes to a downward slope, it gains velocity.

High Rocks in Ralph Stover State Park

In this series of pictures, there is a huge cliff that is located in Narrowsville, PA. at the Delaware River. This cliff "pushes" the water in the Delaware River into a different direction. It causes the river to change its path and go on a different journey.
