What is a Watershed?

The watershed is the region drained by one river system. A ridge of mountains can be a dividing line from which all the rain water and streams eventually drain into one river. The picture at the left shows the Delaware Water Gap. This water gap is part of the Delaware Watershed.

All water drains into a watershed no matter what form it is in. All this snow in Hilltown, PA will eventually flow into a local creek, and then join a larger river.    Frozen creeks (such as this one at Ringing Rocks, PA) and melting snow have the potential to create a flood if they melt too quickly.

Animals that use the watershed can be effected by the water quality just as the animals can effect water quality.    People using waterways may understand that they impact the watershed, but may not realize the way we use water in our own back yards also impacts our local waterways.
