A power line is any conductor or electric line that is supposed to be suspended in the air.

A downed line is a very dangerous conductor that is not suspended in the air.

DOWNED LINES

• Keep yourself and others away from any fallen power lines. Report the location of any downed wires.
• Stay at least 100 feet away from any downed power lines, even if the power is shut off.

CARS

• When driving in a car and a power line falls, the safest thing to do is to stay in the car.
• The rubber tires on a car are going to provide a safe ground for people.
• If in a car, use a cell phone to try and call for help or blow the horn to get the attention of someone. Stay in your car unless it is a life threatening emergency.
• If you need to get out of the car, do not touch any part of the car and the ground at the same time. Jump as far as possible away from the car with both feet landing on the ground at the same time.
