HAIR DRYER PARTS

• Fan - turbine type fan sits on the tip of a small motor
• Air inlet - opening that allows air to go into the hair dryer
• Coil - nichrome (alloy of nickel and chromium) wire wrapped around insulating mica boards
• Safety screen - prevents hair or other objects from being pulled into the hair dryer switches - on and off, rate of airflow control, temperature control
• Barrel - tube where heated air is forced out of the hair dryer
• Safety cut-off switch - heat sensor that trips a circuit and shuts off the motor when the temperature gets too hot

ELECTRICITY

When the hair dryer is plugged in and turned on, the current flows through the hair dryer.    Switches for on/off control, rate of airflow, and temperature control the appliance. The circuit supplies power to coiled wire in the heating element.    The current makes the electrical motor spin, which runs the fan. The air moved by the fan is sent through the hair dryer, through the heating element.

The heat rising from the coil warms the air by convection. Hot air comes out of the hair dryer. The hair dryer dries the hair by speeding up the evaporation of the water from the hair's surface.
