 MONUMENTS

Monuments can be found throughout the world and date back to ancient times. A person does not need to be famous to have a monument. Well-to-do families often build monuments for their family members. Monuments cost several times more than a regular tombstone. Today a monument might cost $20,000 - $100,000 depending on the size, type of materials, sculptural elements and the work involved in creating it. Information on a monument is usually the same type of information found on a tombstone. There may also be symbols and designs on a monument.

Sometimes a whole family will share a monument as their tombstone, and family members will be buried around the monument in the family plot. This family plot include a large monument and other family markers such as the one seen below.

Also common on family plots are letter markers such as this one. This marker represents the corner of a plot for the family surname initial. These markers usually appear around four corners of a family plot. Three of the four corner markers are in this photograph.
