BANKS - TRADITIONAL

Quakertown National Bank

The Quakertown National Bank in Perkasie was built in 1923 and is located at 607 Chestnut Street. The building was originally a bank, The Perkasie Trust Company (seen at top right).

The building then served as the Borough Hall for Perkasie for many years, and has recently returned to its original use as a bank.

Most branches of Quakertown National Bank have a little cupola on top of the building. This style would not look appropriate on this historic building with its flat roof. The basic layout of this building is a simple cube. The entry to this bank is very defined and includes some ornamentation to suggest the importance of the building.

The ornamentation above the main entrance suggests the style of classical sculpture on the building facade.   This window is not just one piece of glass; the glass is made of divided lights (cut into many sections).

First Union Bank

This building combines two architectural styles. The original building structure can be seen at the corner of Seventh and Chestnut Streets.   The post-modern structure wraps around the original building to create a larger square base (what architects call the footprint of the building).

Corinthian order pilasters are found on the older section of the building.   The change from one style to another is abrupt; no effort has been made to create a transition from one style to another.

On the Chestnut Street side of the building, the change from one style to another is also abrupt.   Pilasters imitate fluted Corinthian columns with their bases,

Note in 2001: This building will change from a bank to the new Perkasie Borough Hall. There are plans to return the building to its original facade on the Chestnut Street side.
