Sports - Past

Played in Perkasie

In the past many team sports have traditionally practiced and competed in Perkasie. These sports include football, basketball, baseball, and field hockey; soccer was added in the 1960's and lacrosse in the 1970's. These sports have been played for many years at Perkasie High School and then at Sell-Perk High School (later at South Junior High School and Penn South Middle School - as the building changed names). In the Sell-Perk era, competitive sports were played at the high school level. Many of these sports were also available to be played in the community leagues.

As the years passed, junior high school athletic leagues were created. Significant changes also occurred in more recent years with Federal Title IX legislation that established requirements to give equal access to programs based upon gender. More athletic programs were added in both secondary schools and area colleges for girls because of these requirements.

BASEBALL

In the 1930's baseball was a big sport in the community. Most boys and even some girls played baseball. In Perkasie, baseballs were made for major league baseball, and the defective balls were used by kids to play ball. The Sell-Perk High School girls softball teams were champions for many years. There was also a league called American Legion for boys 15-18 and the Perkasie team was the Bux-Mont league champion for several years.

The women's Glenettes also played in the summers at Frank R. Kulp Memorial Playground for many years; this adult community team sometimes attracted Pennridge High school stars. This successful team often competed in national playoffs.

BASKETBALL

Basketball was played by boys and girls beginning in the 1930's at Sell-Perk High School. Girls basketball was a lot different than it is now. Back in the 1930's there were six girls on the court for each team, three guards and three forwards. The forwards would stay on the offensive end of the court while the guards would play defense.

Boys basketball also was played a lot though there were few outdoor nets to practice on. The high school boys teams were champions several times in the 1930's and 1940's.

FOOTBALL

Football was also a sport that was played by a lot of the boys in Perkasie. The boys played for community as well as school teams. In 1930 Sell-Perk High School football was the best team around.

The Greenjackets organization started circa 1935; this organization has been active ever since and has run a very successful program.

FIELD HOCKEY

Hockey at Sell-Perk High School was also very successful in the 1930's and 1940's in that they won several championships.

SOCCER

Soccer competition began in the 1960's. School and community league competition was available first for boys, and later for girls.
