Perkasie Tunnel Today

Today the Perkasie tunnel is used by some freight trains, though some local residents have never seen a train in town. Train whistles are occasionally heard as the trains enter and exit the tunnel, particularly in the middle of the night..

Passenger service was stopped and Philadelphia service now runs only to Lansdale and Doylestown, PA. Every few years some area residents discuss opening up the line again to passenger service between Lansdale and Bethlehem.

TUNNEL CONDITION TODAY

The entryway is significantly overgrown with vegetation. Rocks falling from the tunnel continue to be a problem.

One of the side walls on the Perkasie side appears well intact but overgrown with vegetation.    The other side wall was in need of repair in 2000.
