DEFINITION OF GROWING SEASON

The growing season is also called the frost free season. It is the part of the year when crops and native plants can be grown. The length of the grwoing season is measured in two ways. One counts the days of the year when the average temperature is above the temperature at which crops will germinate and continue to grow (along with native plants). This measurement can vary with the type of crop.

Another way to measure the growing season is the number of frost-free days, i.e. the average number of days between the last frost of spring and the first killing frost of fall or winter. Most crops require a frost-free season of at least 90 days. Gardeners and farmers plant, grow, and harvest their crops during the growing season.
