PIERS and ABUTMENTS

   
There are two piers and two abutments on the canal aqueduct.   The piers and abutments are faced with stone.
     
These structures support the three arches of the aqueduct.   Here is a detail on the north abutment of the canal aqueduct.
   
This is the south abutment of the aqueduct before it was filled with water. Note the stone wall at right.   Here is a water release unit or gate built into the side wall of the aqueduct to release excess water into the Tohickon Creek below.
