Pearl S. Buck- As An Author |
Pearl S. Buck was an American novelist, though she lived in China for much of her early life. Pearl's books, which sympathetically portray China and its people, number over 65. By studying the Chinese novel, the style of Pearl's books was shaped into what it is--simple and direct, showing concern for the fundamental values of human life. Pearl was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for her novel "The Good Earth" in 1932. This book portrayed the life of Chinese peasants and its challenges. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1938, after striving to create a better understanding of China in all of her books. Pearl Buck wrote many novels incorporating this theme, some under her real name, and some under the pseudonym John Sedges. She also wrote two volumes of autobiography.
