The Plaza Theater was built in the spring and summer of 1922. The building was financed by a bond issue of $35,000 and was built for approximately $40,000. It was designed by A. Oscar Martin, and built by The Freil Mc Leister Co.,Contractors, Philadelphia. Dedication services were held on September 16, 1922 and were attended by representatives from 12 film-producing companies. The Plaza Theater orchestra was organized and used for playing the pictures until March 10, 1923 when the $7,500 Wurlitzer Hope Jones Unit Orchestra was dedicated and Russell S. Kramer was kept as the organist. The organ designed for a motion picture theater included a regular complement of pipes and 38 instrumental attachments.
The auditorium was 137 x 40 feet and contained 638 seats. The woodwork and furniture was in American walnut. The ceiling and walls were white with sunken panels trimmed with scroll work. The stage was 20 x 15 feet and. Above the stage was the organ loft and an orchestra pit also graced the front of the stage. A Typhoon Ventilator ( 4 large fans 6 foot in diameter) were used to circulate warm air from heaters under the stage in cold weather or to force cooling breezes through the building during warm weather.
The theater was owned and operated by the Perkasie Fire Company and governed by a board of directors. Staff members included a manager, organist, assistant organist, projectionist, assistant projectionist, cashier, two ushers, and several other staff members manning the door. Equipment included two Simplex Projection Machines, Martin Rotary Converter, and an automatic emergency electric lighting system. The seating capacity was 638 with specially built chairs.
In 1929 the Plaza Theater was open Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday nights with shows at 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. Movies were shown Monday-Saturday and were not allowed to be shown on Sunday. The cost to get in the theater was only about 10 cents. The Plaza Theater was used at this location until the 1950's when a fire burned it down.
