Bridgetown 1866-1916 |
United Methodist Church |
The Evangelical Association Church of Bridgetown was the first church building in the present Borough of Perkasie. Baptist, Methodist and Protestant parishioners were able to get baptized at this church. Bridgetown got its name, is because everyone had to cross that one bridge to get over to the church. The church was built at Main and Market Streets (now South Perkasie) and was knocked down in 1916 when the cemetery was expanded at this location.
A second church was built at 5th & Market Streets in 1888; this building was known as Bethel Church. In 1927 a third building was built at Fifth & Market Streets. In 1946 the First Evangelical Church became the Evangelical United Brethren Church. In 1956 the building was renovated and enlarged to its present size. I n 1970 the congregation's name was again changed to First Methodist Church. The pictures below show the current building at Fifth and Market Streets in Perkasie.
