KILOWATT

A kilowatt consists of 1,000 watts. Kilo mean 1,000 and Watt means Watt. The more the watts, the brighter or more energy the object has. For example, if one light bulb has 100 watts and another has 60 watts, then the 100 watt light bulb will be brighter than the 60 watt light bulb.

When the electricity personnel check an electrical meter, they check what is called a kilowatt-hour. A kilowatt-hour is the amount of kilowatts a person uses in an hour.

There are some objects that use more watts than others. Heating and cooling systems, such as electric heaters and air-conditioners, use greater amounts of watts. Some objects only use a small amount of watts, such as a clock or a light bulb.

A megawatt is 1,000,000 watts. The electric company uses this measurement to determine how much electricity a city or a town uses. For example, if a town uses 1,500,000 watts, then you would say that the town used 1.5 megawatts of electrical power.
