ARCH STREET SCHOOL

In the fall of 1892 a new new four-room brick school opened at Fifth and Arch Streets in Perkasie. The school cost was $4,776.50 to build the facility. Many town folks objected to the location stating that the building was ". . . way out in the field near Hagersville." A two-room addition was added in 1895 and in 1901 another two-room addition was built. In July of 1928 the Perkasie School Board decided to install plumbing at Arch Street and in the Perkasie High School building (then located at Third and Chestnut Streets). In 1944 there were eight rooms that housed the elementary grades at Arch Street School. Six years later with the annexation of the third ward (South Perkasie), a tract of land was acquired and the Arch Street building was expanded again. Though the building was built in several phases the overall design of the structure appeared very unified.

Arch Street school closed in 1963 when Perkasie Elementary School (now Guth Elementary) opened. Perkasie Rotary Club financed the razing (tearing down) of the building and the Perkasie Borough Council agreed to fund the cost of the project by means of a bond issue. In October of 1971 a much needed new fire station was dedicated on this property.
