Penn South Middle School is located at Fifth and Cedar Streets on the border of Sellersville and Perkasie Boroughs. The principal in 2000 is Dr. Margaret Kantes, and the Assistant Principal is Mr. James Shultz.
TEAM STRUCTURE AND CLASSES
Students are divided into core teams, with core teachers for English, mathematics, science, social studies and computer education / technology education (8th) or computer education / reading (7th). Students have classes with their team members for five class periods during the school day. There are two 7th and two 8th grade teams. Each team has it's own name; in the year 2000 team names are the Pioneers, the Explorers, 8-E All Stars, and 8-D Discovery.
In addition to core team subjects students have two class periods per day of encore classes. In grade seven students have wellness (health and physical education), vocal music, family & consumer science, and art. In eighth grade encore classes include foreign language /developmental reading, art, family & consumer science, and wellness (health and physical education).
SUPPORT SERVICES
South also offers both counseling services and an instructional support team. Classroom support programs include learning support, gifted support, and ESL (English as a Second Language). Other programs are also available for students with special needs.
ACTIVITIES
Pennridge South Middle School offers many activities in which students can participate. An activities period at the end of the day is used for activities or homeroom. Other activities meet before or after school. Musical options including seventh and eighth grade chorus and band, string ensemble, and women's ensemble; these programs require no audition. Jazz band and Bucks County County Music Festival require the students to audition. An active drama program also produces several productions each year.
Lloyd Poppy Yoder Field | A variety of sports programs are available to South Middle School students. In the fall students can participate in football, co-ed soccer, field hockey, and cheerleading (continues through the winter season). During the winter, girl's and boy's basketball are offered along with wrestling. Co-ed track and field, lacrosse, and softball are played in the spring sports season. |
