CURRICULUM

The curriculum is designed as a hands-on learning experience which places emphasis on active involvement of students instead of relying only on information in textbooks. Classroom sets of literature books have replaced traditional reading textbooks. Emphasis on writing as an integrated experience in the curriculum is a significant change in program since the school first opened.

Improved technology assists student learning today. Classrooms have TV/VCR units, camcorders, tape recorders and laser disk players available in addition to traditional film and filmstrip projectors. Computers are used to assist with many aspects of learning. A computer lab and mobile computer units are also available for student use. Library circulation is also computerized; there is a plan to link all the computer circulation systems between all the buildings in the school district. All computer labs and libraries in the school district have access to the Internet.

Subjects that elementary students have today are language arts, spelling, mathematics, social studies, and science, which are taught by grade level teachers. Students also have specialists who teach art, music, wellness (health and physical education), library, and guidance; the amount of time depends on the grade level. Support programs are offered including gifted education, learning support, reading support, instructional support, ESL (English as a Second Language), and speech/language classes, as well as specialized programs for students with specific needs. A recent effort has been made to support these students in the regular classroom, whenever possible, rather than in a separate classroom.

ACTIVITIES AND OTHER GUTH FACTS
