SELLERSVILLE-PERKASIE
H.S. (SEL-PERK)
 |

In 1929 the Sellersville and Perkasie
Boards of Education got together and decided to provide a better education
for students in the area. They decided to build a joint high school on
the borders of the two districts. E. Williams Martin of Wilmington, Delaware
was chosen to design the school. |
The Consolidated Sellersville-Perkasie
(Sell-Perk) High School building was dedicated on February 11, 1931. It
could hold 300 students in grades nine, ten, eleven, and twelve. It also
included a gymnasium and an auditorium along with the classrooms. |

The
center of the original building is the border line of Perkasie
and Sellersville. The front of the building features the names
of each town: Sellersville on the left, Perkasie on the right. |

In 1954, when the Pennridge
High School in East Rockhill was built, the school changed names
and became Pennridge Junior High School . The junior high held
seventh, eight, and ninth graders from the townships of East
Rockhill, West Rockhill, Hilltown, and Bedminster and the boroughs
of Perkasie, Sellersville, Silverdale, and Dublin. |

In 1957 a new wing was added to
the school to accommodate the increase in students. The firm of Micklewright
and Mountford built 15 new classrooms, a second gymnasium and a cafeteria
/kitchen complex (on the Sellersville end of the wing). |
In 1965 another change occurred at the school
when Pennridge Central Middle School was built in East Rockhill.
The school changed names, and became known as Pennridge South
Middle School. The attending students came from West Rockhill,
Sellersville, and parts of Perkasie, Hilltown, and East Rockhill.
Then ten years later, in 1975, another high school building was
built, bringing different grades to South. From 1975 to now, it
has been used for only seventh and eight graders.
In 1990, South was renovated to meet the
demands of their growing number of students. The firm of Diseroad
and Wolff of Hatfield, PA designed the new wing. New facilities
included a gymnasium (capable of seating all students on bleachers
for an event), locker rooms, a science pod, music suite, and eight
more classrooms. Renovations of the original 1930's building and
1950's wing were also completed. The existing upper gymnasium
was converted into a library. The construction process started
in the summer of 1991 and ended in early 1993 - months before
expected.
Many people view the school as a landmark
for the community. It has seen generation after generation attend
school there. Pennridge High School sporting events and graduation
have been held on Lloyd Poppy Yoder Field (the stadium
adjoining Penn South Middle School). This building has been changed
many times, both the atmosphere and it's name, but its sense of
tradition lives on.
