Guth Elementary School-Past

BEGINNINGS

Patricia A. Guth Elementary School was originally called Perkasie Elementary School. When the building opened in the spring of 1963, elementary students were bussed from Arch Street and Third Street Elementary Schools with their books in their hands; they assisted with the move from one building to another. Equipment and furniture was moved over the weekend and the school began to be used the following Monday (in record time).

FACILITY

Perkasie Elementary School was built in 1963. It was a brick, one story building located between Fifth and Seventh Streets in Perkasie near Buttonwood Street. In 1964, an addition was made to Perkasie Elementary School. At this time the school had fifteen classrooms, a library, and other rooms for work areas. At this time the building was used by 500 students from grades K to 6. In 1992, a third addition was added. The facilities were improved again.

An addition was added in 1988 and was occupied in 1989. A basement floor was added to the school in this addition. There were four new classrooms, a gym, three bathrooms, and storage areas were added downstairs. Upstairs the changes included four classrooms, part of the library, one small instructional room, a faculty room , two faculty bathrooms, a storage area, and an elevator.

PROGRAMS

Many basic subjects taught today were taught when the school first opened. Reading, English, spelling, mathematics, science, and social studies classes were the core of the program.

When the building opened, Pennridge School District had art, music, and physical education specialists. At the time, other area school districts did not have such programs taught by specialists.
