Farmhouse on Seventh Street

This farmhouse is located near Pennridge High School at 1134 N. Seventh Street at the corner of Blooming Glen Road.    The rough marks on the wooden window frame are made by early hand operated tools, not from modern power tools that we have today.

There are many farmhouses in the Perkasie area. Most of them were built in the colonial time period and on the large plots of land that people farmed. The houses are usually made of stone, stucco, or wood; sometimes they were made of a combination of the three. The houses are very simple, unlike the fancy houses of the later Victorian era.

Since farmhouses were built during colonial times, they have a long past. Most of these homes were made of stones, from the farmers' fields, stucco, and wood. From the pictures we have, many early Perkasie homes were made from stone. In the past, farmhouses were very small (compared to present day homes). They were simply built and usually were in the shape of a rectangle or 'L'. These homes were made with hand held tools and had a lot of out-buildings.

A barn on the property is also made of stone.    The irregular stone shapes indicate that the stone was not processed at a quarry, but rather from the field.
