VICTORIAN HOUSES - Stone

Sixth & Race Streets

Local residents often called this building the Gray Stone building. This building located at 531 Race Street was built in 1894.

Many Victorian houses, such as this one, have what is known as under-porch grills. This means that the porch is elevated on brick or stone piers or wooden posts. The spaces in between are filled with lattice work (decoratively pierced solid boards). The under-porch grill and lattice work allows the air underneath to circulate under the porch. Because the air is moving, there is less of a chance of moisture that injures joists and decking.

This Victorian house also has a gable above the middle window. This is a shingled gable. These kinds of gables became popular later in the nineteenth century.

The sash is part of the window. It is the dark lining around the window and is usually darker than the rest of the window frames. Also, the storm windows are the same color as the sash.

Also on this Victorian house is a porch apron. A porch apron is like a roof over the door. The porch apron is usually very decorative and adds character to the Victorian house.

Fifth & Arch Streets

This building is located at 504 Arch Street, across the Street from the Perkasie Fire Company building.

The foundation of the Victorian house is made of the same material as the rest of the house. On Victorian homes, the foundation is meant to be seen, not hidden by overgrown plants. A stone or brick foundation is common.

The design of the roof over the porch is very interesting. It is very common to find intricate designs on Victorian houses. The posts holding the roof up are made of wood, as is the design right below the roof on the valance.

The color of the roof is brown, which is a main color scheme for Victorian houses.

attention is drawn to this entrance by the triangle shape of the porch apron and the framing effect of the arched brackets.    Pierced or cut designs are found in the valance and brackets.

Two bay windows on the Arch Street side of the house have tent roofs that are integrated with the main roof.    Three pedimented dormers are also found on this section of the roof.
