VICTORIAN HOUSES -Brick & Stucco

Fifth and Arch Streets

Many Victorian buildings in the Olde Towne part of Perkasie are made of brick. With a brick yard nearby, bricks were easily available as a building material in Perkasie. This brick building is a twin home located at 19 and 17 N. Fifth Street.

These Victorian period homes are a twin house (two residences) in 2000. Many original details appear on the homes, particularly the home with the turret on the corner.

This Victorian home has many cornices. A cornice is the part of the house where the walls and the roof meet. On most Victorian houses the cornice is made of a soft material (such as wood) and made very decoratively.

The chimney, in the far right corner of the house, is made of the same material as the rest of the house. The material is brick. Most Victorian houses are painted, but in Perkasie, many are made of brick.

Many Victorian houses are made of brick or stone. In this specific case the house is made of red brick.

Today the original porch valance and brackets remain on both sides of the porch facing Fifth Street. The valance is a simple series of sticks. The sash around the windows on this particular Victorian house is white, like the posts. The balusters for the porch (right photo) are made from simple stick shapes.    This Victorian house also has an elegant veranda. Most are made of cast-iron, but this one is wooden. Verandas were mainly used for relaxation. The owners can sit outside and feel the cool breeze.

This ground level arched opening frames the window view.    A small detail in the roof gable includes a diamond shaped window.

Sixth & Market Streets

This Victorian building located at 523 Market Street was built in 1883. The building has a stucco wall surface. Stucco is plaster that sets with a hard, stone-like coat. cement stucco is used to cover outer walls of a building.

This home features an extensive amount of Victorian detail including windows with shutters and a wrap-around porch.

The overall house design is almost symmetrical from the Market Street side. A centered entrance is balanced by windows on each side of the entrance. Two chimneys also provide balance at the roof line.

The sky light seen on the picture at left is not original to the home.

The pediment above the door entrance provides emphasis to the entrance. Note the curved top louvered shutters on the windows.    The porch features a cut pattern valance, pendants hanging from the valance, and unusual brackets integrating the porch post with the roof it holds.
